What is dor dor?

Dor dor, from the Persian word for a turn or a lap, is what young Iranians call cruising the city in the evening. It is part flirting, part people-watching, part showing off the car, and it is how a generation met.

The custom

On a warm evening in Tehran, Shiraz or Isfahan, cars fill the main avenues and move at walking pace. Windows are down, Googoosh or the latest pop is playing, and the same streets are driven again and again. Nobody is going anywhere: the drive is the point. A glance between two cars at a light, a smile, a flash of the headlights, and sometimes a phone number passed across on a scrap of paper. That loop is dor dor.

For many Iranians abroad it is a memory of summers back home, or a story told by older cousins. For their children it is a word heard at family parties. Either way it says something everyone recognises: meeting someone was meant to be playful, local and a little bold.

How the app keeps the language

We built Dor Dor around that feeling rather than around a slot machine. The deck is your street. Swiping right is a flash, the headlight hello. A double flash is the extra-bright one that puts your card first in their street. When two people flash each other, they pull over and the chat opens.

It keeps the boldness and drops the risk. Location is city-level only, never your exact position. Every photo is screened and approved by a person before anyone sees it, and anyone can be reported or blocked in two taps.

Frequently asked

What does dor dor mean in English?

Literally a round or a lap. In everyday Persian it means driving around the city for fun, usually in the evening and usually to see and be seen.

How do you write dor dor in Persian?

دور دور. Our app is called Dor Dor after it.

Is flashing headlights still how people meet?

In the app it is: a right swipe is called a flash. On real roads, please keep your eyes on the road.
